Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On turns an analytical but sensitive eye on the world of online sex.
The Netflix Original Series is a follow up to the critically acclaimed documentary Hot Girls Wanted, directed by Jill Bauer and Ronna Gradus, that delved into the amateur porn industry, where social-media savvy young women acquire huge online followings as porn stars. Many of the women featured in the film were skilled at using technology to promote themselves, but very naive about the wider sex industry and were often vulnerable to exploitation.
The series presents a nuanced perspective and does not push an ideological agenda.
Though, also located at the intersection of technology, sex and society, Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On widens the brief by looking at a vast array of people involved in the business of online sex, from feminist pornographers, to Tinder dating, and one shocking episode about a young teenager on trial for livestreaming the rape of her friend on Periscope.
The series presents a nuanced perspective and does not push an ideological agenda, but it certainly takes a critical look at how technology is changing the way we interact romantically and sexually. I’m not sure it comes to any novel or definitive conclusions, but it perfectly captures the moment we are living in and the future we are moving towards.
